Carlson, Sam: Arrived at Bad Kissingen from the 9th Infantry Division in the Spring of 1977. He worked in the S2 shop and eventually became the Squadron Border NCO. In June 1978 Sam was promoted to SFC (RA) and almost at the same time received an appointment as a 2LT (USAR). Sam was transferred to the 3d Armored Division and later to the 1st Inf Div, 66th MI Group, El Salvador, Honduras, Berlin Brigade, the Sergeants Major Academy and the 902d MI Group... retiring in 1987 as a 1SG. In 1992 Sam was advanced on the retired list to CPT/03E. In 2005, Sam was recalled out of retirement and spent two years in CONUS commanding an intelligence unit. In 2007 he went to Afghanistan where he was assigned to the 82d Abn Div and later the 101st Abn He retired again in later 2008 only to be recalled again in 2009 for a deployment to Afghanistan with the 3d IBCT, 10th Mtn Div (LI) for a trip back to Afghanistan. Se served as the Bde Asst S2, the S2/S3 Battle Captain for 4/25 Field Artillery and finally as an advisor to an Afghan National Army Infantry Brigade. He retired for a final time in 2010, returning to the Atlanta area to his civilian employment with Lockheed Martin. He retired from them as well in 2010. Sam is now enjoying the retired life and is using the Post 9/11 GI Bill taking 'fun' courses, plus playing bass guitar in a local rock band. | |
